“ The most philosophically of all the sciences ” : Karl Popper and physical cosmology

چکیده
Problems of scientific cosmology only rarely occur in the works of Karl Popper, the famous Austrian-British philosopher. Nevertheless, it was a subject that interested him and which he occasionally commented on. What is more important, his general claim of falsifiability as a criterion that demarcates science from non-science has played a significant role in periods of the development of modern physical cosmology. The paper examines the historical contexts of the interaction between cosmology and Popperian philosophy of science. Apart from covering Popper’s inspiration from Einstein and his views on questions of cosmology, it focuses on the impact of his thoughts in two periods of controversy of modern cosmology, the one related to the steady state theory and the other to the recent multiverse proposal. It turns out that the impact has been considerable, and continues to be so, but also that the versions of Popperian methodology discussed by cosmologists are sometimes far from what Popper actually thought and wrote.

KARL POPPER The Problem of Induction
A scientist, whether theorist or experimenter, puts forward statements, or systems of statements, and tests them step by step. In the field of the empirical sciences, more particularly, he constructs hypotheses, or systems of theories, and tests them against experience by observation and experiment. I suggest that it is the task of the logic of scientific discovery, or the logic of knowledge, t...
متن کاملSituational logic in social science inquiry: From economics to criminology
Karl R. Popper proposed that the method of explanation in economics, or situational logic, should become the general model for analyses across the social sciences. This article makes good Popper’s proposal by extending situational logic to a social problem outside the traditional scope of economics: crime. Specifically, the discussion reviews models developed by economist Gary S. Becker and cri...
متن کاملKarl Popper and the Copenhagen Interpretation
Popper conceived an experiment whose analysis led to a result that he deemed absurd. Popper wrote that his reasoning was based on the Copenhagen interpretation and therefore invalidated the latter. Actually, Popper’s argument involves counterfactual reasoning and violates Bohr’s complementarity principle. The absurdity of Popper’s result only confirms Bohr’s approach. I called thee to curse min...

Karl Popper discussed admirably the choice between faith and reason [Popper, 1945, Ch. 24]. He admitted that the basis of rationalism is a faith of sorts, a faith in reason. Later on his disciple William W. Bartley dissented from him [Bartley, 1962] and even called him a fideist [Radnitzky and Bartley, 1987, 205, 208, 210-11], much to his annoyance. All this caused bad blood between the two [La...
